At Scrabble club, there’s a prize given in the last game of the night for the highest-scoring opening play. My opponent, fresh off her first-place finish at a tournament in Fresno (and with the plaque on her tile rack shining at me the whole game to remind me) , played HOGTIE. I added a D on the end with BOUNCED, for a total of 86 points, and somehow won the prize –a California Lottery Scratcher ticket.
My day was finally turning around.
